The bathroom mirror is not only a practical item, which allows you to shave, apply makeup, pluck your eyebrows, or style your hair in the bathroom, but it is also a decoration.
Strategically placed mirrors can reflect views from outside your window or the internal parts of your bathroom, such as attractive bathroom furniture, basins and taps, or accessories such as flower vases or clusters of candles, to enhance the sense of space. They can also reflect light, throw it into the corner of the shadow and make the room feel lighter and even bigger.
Bright bathroom mirrors are very useful in small or slightly gloomy bathrooms, because integral lighting ensures that you are lit from the front and can see your own reflection perfectly without any shadow from the ceiling lighting. The lights will often be installed in such a way that they create interesting patterns or illuminate the vintage convex mirror opaque feature panels or panels in the mirror.
Luminous mirrors come in all shapes and sizes, and the light will be different too. Some have colored lighting, some are white. Some might light up the LED, others have other forms of lighting that are more energy efficient. Even though LED lights are more expensive to buy and replace, they are far more efficient and will last longer, so that might be a valuable choice for your wallet and also for the planet.
Bathroom mirrors are rated 'ingress protection' (IP): IP rating 44 or above means you can adjust the position of the bathroom mirror that lights up anywhere in the bathroom, except actually in the bathtub or shower. If you want to install a mirror that lights up here, you must choose a design with a low voltage and proof of total immersion (IP67 or higher).
One option that is worth considering when you are thinking of buying a bathroom mirror is a bathroom mirror cabinet. This is a very useful piece of bathroom furniture if you lack space in the bathroom, because you not only have a mirror surface on your wall, but also some storage space that is useful for your medicines or hygiene products.
When installing your mirror, first choose your place and make sure you are not in danger of drilling into the electrical wires on your bathroom wall. Consider things like the direction of natural light (unless you have a mirror that lights) and the ease of daily use when you decide where to position your mirror. Make sure you are happy with the mirror placement, first by holding it yourself and approaching, as you would when using it; then ask someone else to hold it in the same position, while you look at it from a distance, to gauge how it appears in relation to the rest of your bathroom. Use the spirit level to make sure the mirror is straight, and mark the four corners lightly on the wall to use as a guide when you drill your mounting holes.
To make these mounting holes, first measure very carefully, then double check your measurements - then drill. Be careful if you drill tiles not to break tiles: use hard drill bits and apply gentle pressure for sustained periods while drilling will give you a higher chance to drill holes without accident than using brute force. If your wall consists of bricks or beams under the plaster, you must insert the plug into the hole in your wall to install it; if it's a wooden wall, you won't do it. Make sure you drill the hardest part of the wall to increase the durability of your mirror: drilling into a Antiqued convex mirror mortar between bricks, or to plaster boards between wooden buttons, will not provide a satisfactory grip for mounting your screws.
Depending on the power source for lighting in the illuminated mirror, you may need to install a mirror. Or, it might be powered by an internal battery and does not require electrical work during installation. Remember that all electrical work at home must always be done by a qualified electrician, so make sure you hire a professional for installation if you do buy an electric-powered lighting mirror.
