Sometimes I joke that no one knows how painful interior design is like me, because my family has moved around quite often in the last ten years. The search for long-term housing at reasonable rental rates made us pack up and move once in a while, and more than once we had to settle in places with small rooms. Older houses naturally do not have the broadest quality of newer models, because today we tend to emphasize size. We want comfort and luxury, so it's natural to visit a new open house and find a large bathroom and living room. However, what if you can't find a newer house, and have to settle for a comfortable place, like in a small one?

The furniture you place in a room can contribute to how big or small the room appears. Using certain colors and objects can fool the eye into thinking that there is more space than is actually available. In turn, you might feel more comfortable in 19th century convex mirror your new living room than you think. Some items to consider include:

1) Bookshelves. Wall to ceiling bookshelves in a room especially will create an impression of usable space. Remember, too, that you don't have to fill all the space with just books. If you have a collection or photos, create an area that helps determine your home. This also creates some space on the shelf, too, giving the room a spacious look.

2) Pocket door. Opened doors add to the impression of space in the room, which is why you don't want to keep it closed. Removing standard doors and installing pocket styles that slide in and out are one way to maintain this space while still allowing privacy when needed.

3) Multifunctional pieces. Ottoman who doubles as a coffee table or storage is good to have in a room. You can not only use it for more than one purpose, but also eliminate the need for additional furniture in the room. Even better, if you can find multifunctional pieces with wheels you can adjust and move where needed to create more space.

4) Mirror. Some believe placing a mirror in a room creates a sense of space. Small Decorative convex mirror bathrooms, in particular, may have large wall mirrors to help compensate for the cramped feeling you might experience.

With the right placement, your furniture can help create the illusion of space and comfort in a smaller home. You might want to check the decor manuals or website for help, or browse through your local furniture store ideas.
