The Missing Link

When we think of "accessories" in home decoration, we imagine paintings, candles, flowers, pillows and small things that determine our personality and reflect our tastes. But even with the home decorations, collections, and trinkets we use to color the world in our homes, there is still something missing that gets little attention and deserves more - the missing link.

Yes, we have furniture - living room sofas, reclining chairs, beds, dressers, kitchen cabinets, and dining room tables, but there are other unsung heroes who are ignored that are actually an integral part of the decorating scheme.

Believe it or not, what is needed is more furniture! Accessory furniture is a missing link - a second additional thought to our home that is actually a vital need for functionality and beauty. They are items that hold things together so we really feel "at home" in our home and make us proud to invite others to share.

Furniture is incomplete without furniture

What is the use of a sofa without a guest table or table and lamp? The living room is just that - a place to "live" and enjoy a get-together, visiting friends, special events, or just a quiet place to sit and read a good book. The family room is just that - a place where families can relax and enjoy.

Have you ever visited a house that does not have living equipment such as lamps or side tables? How comfortable do you feel there? What's the use of an easy chair venetian mirrored furniture without a place to put your newspaper or drinks? Yes, you have an entrance table made of the best wood and designed to perfection, but isn't that better, looking better, serving more purposes with a mirror on it?

This is what we call furniture accessories. That's the missing link. Furniture accessories are what make your larger pieces not only more functional, but more beautiful and likeable. Accessing furniture is complementing your interior environment for a more complete life.

Amount of History in Furniture Accessories

Side table is a side table is a side table - or is it? Of course, there are side tables on the market to suit every taste. Looking for storage capacity, versatility, or accent statements? You don't need to look far. But you can add even more presence to the room by combining the past and the present with an extraordinarily simple design - maybe a side table with Queen Anne legs and spoon legs like a Porringer Table that brings history to life and adds differences to the larger parts furniture was complementary. A side table like this is a place to place items, to display flower arrangements, candles or collectibles. What would we do without a very useful side table but taken for granted?

Using Light to Define Space

The sideboard in your dining room or on the fireplace is another perfect place for furniture accessories - mirrors. Choosing a mirror to cover a large area can feel a daunting task, but the trick is to consider what it reflects, whether indoors or windows outdoors. A mirror not only immediately enlarges the room by opening the view, but reflects light which allows candlelight and sunlight to become an integral part of the atmosphere of space.

An example of creativity in the history of mirror making is the Virginia Tavern Mirror, made of Tiger Maple flanked on each side by a charming brass candle holder. There are also examples of mirrors in history such as the Monticello Mirror which evokes the famous furniture of Thomas Jefferson's Monticello. So, they know, even in the colonial era that the reflection of a mirror not only adds extra light, but adds charm and beauty to home decor. The same principle applies today.

Choosing the Right Furniture Accessories

Home decorating ideas that include furniture accessories can be as simple as her old venetian mirrors cheap grandma's handmade bench in the kitchen which adds character and charm while at the same time being used to reach remote places.

Initially, the classic step bench featured a hole in the middle to be carried and joined by a peg (no nails or screws) and handmade with fine cherry wood. This version is still available today and can add antique charm to almost every room in the house.

The moral of the story is that when you choose something as simple as a step bench to help you reach the top shelf in the kitchen, think of yourself as a home decorator and look for a step bench with characters and charm.
